It’s the start of a New Year and a time when many men and women want to start making changes. If your blemishes, wrinkles, and uneven skin tone have you feeling down, consider non-surgical skin resurfacing techniques to restore a youthful glow. At the Buckingham Center for Facial Plastic Surgery in Austin, Texas, Dr. Edward Buckingham can correct your complexion in as little as 15 minutes.

Erase Acne Scars

Acne scars are a common complaint with younger men and women. Years of acne can leave scars that affect your self esteem. The treatment used depends on the severity of the scarring.

Most acne scars are treated using laser resurfacing. Using the Matrix CO2 fractionated laser, Dr. Buckingham is able to target the acne scars with the laser. The system is adjustable to give the surgeon control on how much coverage is needed and then one or more passes of the laser may be necessary. Following a laser treatment, your skin may appear red, almost like you have a bad sunburn, and will flake off as the days pass.  Ointment must be worn on the skin for 3-10 days and expect the recovery to take between one and two weeks.

For severe scarring, Dr. Buckingham improves your complexion through a combination of chemical peels and dermabrasion. You need just one hour for this treatment and then a recovery period of about two weeks for women who can wear makeup but longer for men who cannot conceal the red color of the new skin.

Even Your Skin’s Texture and Tone

Dr. Buckingham also uses laser skin resurfacing to smooth fine lines and wrinkles and correct uneven skin tone. Erbium laser treatments are the preferred option for complaints like age spots, enlarged pores and fine lines. Not only does the laser target the problem areas and remove the dull, upper layers of skin, but it also triggers collagen production to help create long-lasting results.

An Erbium laser treatment takes about half an hour and causes minimal discomfort. Dr. Buckingham may not even have to use a topical anesthetic. Following the treatment, you can return to work and normal activities instantly. You may find your skin is red and flaky for a few days, however, but you can start using makeup the day after the laser treatment to help hide any redness.

After any skin resurfacing treatment, make sure you protect your skin against future damage. Always wear a broad spectrum sunscreen with an SPF of at least 30. Reapply the sunscreen throughout the day and wear a hat to shade the face.
