As a facial plastic surgeon here in Austin, TX, I see many patients interested in rhinoplasty, often referred to as a nose job. One of the most common questions I hear is, "Will my insurance cover it?"
This is a fantastic question! Understanding how insurance handles rhinoplasty can be confusing, especially because there are both functional and cosmetic aspects to the procedure.
Let's Break it Down: Septoplasty vs. Rhinoplasty
First, it's important to distinguish between septoplasty and rhinoplasty.
- Septoplasty: This procedure corrects a deviated septum, the wall that separates your nostrils. A deviated septum can cause breathing difficulties, congestion, and even facial pressure.
- Rhinoplasty: This surgery focuses on altering the shape and appearance of the nose. It can address concerns like prominent hump, nostril width, or tip projection.
Insurance Coverage: Function vs. Form
The key to understanding insurance coverage is the distinction between functional and cosmetic aspects of the procedure.
Functional Septoplasty: If a deviated septum is causing breathing problems, a septoplasty can often be covered by insurance.
Cosmetic Rhinoplasty: However, if your primary concern is with the aesthetic appearance of your nose and you have no functional breathing problems, then a traditional rhinoplasty likely won't be covered by insurance.
Septoplasty/Rhinoplasty: Sometimes you have both functional and cosmetic concerns. Thus, your insurance may cover the functional concerns, while you will be responsible for paying out-of-pocket for the cosmetic concerns.

The Importance of Consultation
If you're considering a rhinoplasty and have questions about insurance coverage, it's crucial to schedule a consultation with a board-certified surgeon, like myself. During the consultation, we can discuss your specific concerns, evaluate your breathing function, and determine if a septoplasty or rhinoplasty is necessary. We can then delve into your insurance details to see if a portion of the procedure might be covered with our patient liaison and team.
Here at The Buckingham Center, I understand that navigating insurance can be overwhelming. That's why my staff and I are here to assist you in understanding your coverage and creating a financial plan for your rhinoplasty journey.
