Fellowship

In 2014, Dr. Buckingham became a Fellowship Director for the American Academy of Facial Plastic and Reconstructive Surgery (AAFPRS), one of the top fellowship programs in the world. Recognized as an authority in teaching and the practice of facial plastic surgery, Dr. Buckingham mentors one surgeon every year. During these twelve months, he provides the valuable training, specialized knowledge, and surgical skills needed to be a successful facial plastic surgeon.

The fellowship position at Buckingham Facial Plastic Surgery is extremely competitive. During the twelve month period, the chosen doctor will have exposure to the full spectrum of facial plastic surgery cases, becoming intensely involved with a wide breadth of surgical and noninvasive patients. Dr. Buckingham’s cutting-edge clinical research provides a unique opportunity for enculturation into the study of cutting-edge plastic surgery theory. Dr. Buckingham’s guidance, advising, and support provides professional development, ensuring the fellow is ready for the comprehensive oral and written examination that is administered after the completion of the year-long fellowship.

Bio

Originally from Lafayette, Louisiana, Paige Kennedy, M.D. attended Louisiana State University where she earned a bachelor’s degree in Psychology. She then decided to pursue a career in medicine and earned her medical degree at Baylor College of Medicine, where she was elected as the Class President. She then went on to complete an internship and residency in Otolaryngology – Head & Neck Surgery at The University of Chicago where she gained valuable experience training in a top tier high-volume medical center. During her training, Dr. Kennedy performed a wide range of both functional and cosmetic head and neck procedures, and ultimately found her passion in Facial Plastic & Reconstructive Surgery. Following residency, Dr. Kennedy pursued a highly competitive fellowship through the American Academy of Facial Plastic and Reconstructive Surgery and was fortunate to match at her top choice program in Austin, Texas with Dr. Edward Buckingham.

Dr. Kennedy enjoys spending time with her husband and her son. She loves exploring the outdoors, running, playing volleyball, and cooking. She is excited to take care of patients at the Buckingham Center for Facial Plastic Surgery.

Bio Marissa Lafer, MD

Originally from Los Angeles, Marissa Lafer, MD received her bachelor’s degree from Cornell University. Dr. Lafer initially worked on Wall Street in New York City after college before deciding to pursue a career in medicine. She completed her postbac training at Columbia University before earning her medical degree from NYU School of Medicine. Dr. Lafer continued her training at NYU where she completed her internship and residency in Otolaryngology – Head and Neck Surgery and worked at high-volume centers in New York City including NYU, Bellevue, VA, and Lenox Hill Hospitals. In medical school and residency, Dr. Lafer held several leadership roles including those on Student Council then the House Staff Leadership Committee and was involved with research within the Department.

Following residency, Dr. Lafer was selected for a highly competitive fellowship through the American Academy of Facial Plastic and Reconstructive Surgery with Dr. Edward Buckingham in Austin, Texas.

Melissa Bender, M.D. received her B.S. in Biological Basis of Behavior with a minor in Hispanic Studies and Chemistry from the University of Pennsylvania in Philadelphia where she graduated magna cum laude. She then returned to her hometown of Houston, Texas for medical school at Baylor College of Medicine. She then completed an internship and residency in Otolaryngology- Head & Neck Surgery at Emory University in Atlanta, Georgia where she received excellent training in a high-volume center and invaluable trauma experience at Grady Memorial Hospital. Scott Smith, M.D. received his B.A. in Studio Art and Biology from the University of Virginia in Charlottesville, VA. It was here where he began to combine his interests in the study of fine arts and medicine. Dr. Smith returned to his hometown of Columbus, Ohio for medical school where he graduated cum laude from The Ohio State University College of Medicine. After receiving his medical degree, he stayed to finish his internship and residency in Otolaryngology – Head & Neck Surgery at The Ohio State University Wexner Medical Center, one of the highest volume programs in the country and ranked #6 by US News & World Report. During his training, Dr. Smith performed a wide range of both cosmetic and functional head and neck surgery cases. Following residency, Dr. Smith pursued a highly competitive fellowship through the American Academy of Facial Plastic and Reconstructive Surgery, matching at his top choice. He is completing his fellowship under the auspices of Dr. Edward Buckingham in Austin, TX.

During his free time, Dr. Smith enjoys spending time with his wife and two children. He loves traveling with his family, skiing, sailing, painting, playing squash, and The Ohio State Buckeyes. He enjoys meeting new people and exploring new places.

Bio

Michael Hall, M.D. received his B.S. in Biology from Lehigh University in Bethlehem, PA. It was here where his passion for medicine began; working as an Emergency Medical Technician at the university during the school year and spending his summer months working as an Emergency Room Critical Care Technician at a local hospital. Dr. Hall then went on to receive his medical degree from Rutgers – New Jersey Medical School in Newark, NJ.

After receiving his medical degree, Dr. Hall moved back home to Philadelphia, PA and completed his internship and residency in Otolaryngology – Head and Neck Surgery at Thomas Jefferson University Hospital, one of the busiest surgical training programs in the country. During his training, Dr. Hall performed a wide range of both cosmetic and functional head and neck surgery cases. He has authored numerous publications and has presented at various meetings in both Otolaryngology and Facial Plastic and Reconstructive Surgery. In 2015, he was awarded the AAOA Merck Clinical Scholar Award for his research efforts. Following residency, Dr. Hall pursued a highly competitive fellowship through the American Academy of Facial Plastic and Reconstructive Surgery. He is currently completing his fellowship under the direction of Dr. Edward Buckingham.During his free time, Dr. Hall enjoys spending time outdoors with his wife and dog. He is an avid runner, Philadelphia sports enthusiast, music lover and world traveler. He enjoys meeting new people, exploring new places and eating good food.

Bio

Sudeep Roy, M.D. was born and raised in Rome, Italy, where he completed most of his early education. Dr. Roy then moved to Northern California to complete a Bachelor of Science (B.S.) in Biological Sciences at Stanford University. There, he developed a keen interest in Medicine and Research, leading him to complete a highly coveted research internship at the Palo Alto VA hospital where he co-authored a landmark paper on the effects of aging on muscle growth factor regeneration published in Science.Dr. Roy then switched coasts to complete his medical degree at New York Medical College, one of the oldest and largest health sciences colleges in the U.S. He was elected to the local chapter of Alpha Omega Alpha medical honor society, reserved for medical students with the highest academic achievements who also exhibit good character, leadership, professionalism and a dedication to the community service. Following medical school, he made his way to Philadelphia, PA, to pursue an internship in General Surgery and residency training in Otolaryngology-Head & Neck Surgery at Thomas Jefferson University Hospital, one of the busiest surgical training programs in the country. This is where he developed an astute interest in Facial Plastic and Reconstructive surgery, performing a wide range of cosmetic and functional head and neck surgery. During his tenure at Jefferson, he was awarded the prestigious Stephen F. Balshi Award for Excellence in Resident Research for his ongoing work in the effects of aging on tissue healing and regeneration after surgery, as well as functional rhinoplasty.

Dr. Roy is an accomplished vocalist, an avid cook/foodie, soccer aficionado, world traveler and fluent in Italian, Spanish, Hindi and Bengali. During his leisure time, Dr. Roy loves exploring the great city of Austin with his wife, who is also a physician, and their 2-year-old twin boys.
