Daxxify® in Austin at the Buckingham Center

For years, people have been using injectables for facial rejuvenation purposes. Neuromodulators (e.g., BOTOX, Xeomin, Dysport, Juveau) are injectables that individuals frequently receive to address the signs of aging that are brought on by muscle movement. While the current neuromodulators are highly effective, their results are rather short-lived, lasting approximately 3 to 4 months. However, a new, longer-lasting, peptide-powered neuromodulator from Revance Aesthetics made its debut on December 1, 2022. This new cosmetic neuromodulator is called Daxxify (aka Daxi).

What is Daxxify?

Daxxify (DaxibotulinumA) has been shown in clinical studies to last on average one to one and a half months longer than the time you get with your usual neuromodulator. The providers at the Buckingham Center for Facial Plastic Surgery are proud to be among the 1% chosen to provide Daxxify in Austin, TX to their patients directly following its release.

What Makes Daxxify Unique?

Daxxify is the only neuromodulator that is free of animal-based components and human serum albumin (HSA). Instead of using the HSA protein and animal-based components for stability, Daxxify’s formula uses Peptide Exchange Technology (PXT), which involves the use of short chains of amino acids (i.e., peptides). This revolutionary technology lengthens the ability of botulinum A to keep the treated muscle fibers from moving, which is why Daxxify’s results may last longer than its competitors’.

How Does Daxxify Work?

Just like its competitors, upon injection, Daxi delivers a form of botulinum toxin to the areas the provider targets. Once Daxxify takes effect, muscle movements and contractions in the treatment areas temporarily reduce or cease.

Who Can Administer Daxxify Injections in Austin, Texas?

A select group of cosmetic surgeons and providers including those at the Buckingham Center for Facial Plastic Surgery in Austin, Texas, received specialized training so they can provide Daxxify injections to their patients. Following training, the providers at Buckingham Center now provide Daxibotulinumtoxin injections, otherwise known as Daxxify or Daxi, to their patients.

What to Expect During a Treatment Session to Address Frown Lines with Daxi

Before treatment begins, the provider must identify the exact location of the patient’s corrugator and procerus muscles by having the patient actively contract them. To contract these muscles, the patient moves each eyebrow inward towards the other. Then, the provider palpates the glabellar muscle mass.

After cleansing and sanitizing the treatment areas, the provider injects Daxxify into the corrugator and procerus muscles in five locations.

The right and left medial corrugator muscles are located in the area above the nose and each eyebrow.

The typical injection site for treating frown lines is in the area above the eyebrow, close to where the eyebrow begins. The right and left lateral corrugator muscles extend upwards and further out than the medial corrugator section. The procerus muscle is located between the eyebrows.

Who can receive Daxxify injections in Austin, Texas?

The FDA-approved Daxi injections are designed for individuals who are 18 years of age or older. Many people seeking neuromodulator treatment to address lines and wrinkles are in their late twenties to early sixties. Younger patients frequently choose to have neuromodulator injections to prevent the onset of wrinkles resulting from muscle movement. By preventing the onset of dynamic wrinkles, their likelihood of developing deep lines in the treatment areas decreases.

Is there anyone who should avoid having Daxxify injections?

Yes, pregnant women, women currently breastfeeding and those who have previously experienced an adverse reaction to a neuromodulator should avoid Daxxify injections.

What is a neuromodulator?

A neuromodulator is a neurotoxin that is injected into a particular muscle to limit its range of motion by causing the muscle to relax. Using a neurotoxin to relax specific muscles can help rejuvenate the face.

How does a neurotoxin keep a muscle from moving?

A neuromodulator injection blocks the communication signals that cause the treated muscle to move or contract. Besides rejuvenating the face, limiting the movement of muscles that contribute to the formation of dynamic wrinkles discourages the deepening of fine lines and wrinkles already present in the treatment areas.

What is a dynamic wrinkle?

Dynamic wrinkles result from muscle movement and contractions, which is why relaxing specific muscles with a neuromodulator can help rejuvenate the face.

Which lines and wrinkles can a provider address with neurotoxin injections?

Dynamic wrinkles include glabellar lines (aka 11s and frown lines), crow’s feet, and the horizontal lines that develop across the forehead are the most common areas. Other less common injections can occur in neck bands, wrinkles around the mouth, and muscles that cause frowning.

Why would a patient choose Daxxify over the other neuromodulators available in Austin, Texas?

Following Daxxify’s release, many patients may decide to have Daxi instead of the other neuromodulators currently available (e.g., BOTOX, Xeomin, Dysport, Juveau). The longevity of Daxi’s results is the main reason patients choose Daxxify over the other neurotoxins. The results achieved by Daxi have been shown to last on average around one to one and a half months longer than the result an individual gets with their usual neuromodulator of choice.

How do patients maintain their results?

Although the current neuromodulators offer amazing results, these results are relatively short-lived. The results that are achieved with current neurotoxins usually last about three to four months. Therefore, after receiving injections, patients who want to maintain their rejuvenated appearance must return several times a year for follow-up injections. Over time, Daxxify may be preferred because this product offers similar but longer lasting results.

How often do patients who receive Daxxify injections in Austin, Texas, return for follow-up injections?

On average patients who receive Daxi injections will return for follow-up injections two to three times a year, some patients may only need to return to the Buckingham Center for Facial Plastic Surgery in Austin, Texas, for maintenance injections once or twice a year.

How frequently can a patient receive Daxxify injections?

Patients who are not receiving any other botulinum toxin products can safely receive Daxi injections once their current neuromodulator treatment has faded.

Is there anything that affects how long a patient’s neurotoxin injection results last?

For the most part, the longevity of a patient’s results depends on the brand of neurotoxin they receive and the speed of their metabolism. For example, individuals who have a fast metabolism may notice that they need to return to the Buckingham Center, to have their maintenance injections sooner rather than later.

Why do glabellar lines develop?

Glabellar lines are typically caused by the repetitive movement of the procerus muscle and the corrugator supercilii muscles.

What factors determine the likelihood that an individual will develop frown lines?

  • How taut an individual’s glabella skin is – this is the skin that is located between the eyebrows, just above the nose
  • Their genetics
  • How frequently they make facial expressions that cause movement of the procerus and corrugator supercilia muscles
  • The shape of their face
  • Use of sunscreen and good skincare

What causes the procerus muscle and corrugator muscles to move?

As an individual makes certain facial expressions, the procerus muscle and the corrugator supercilii muscles begin to move or contract. These muscle movements and contractions cause the skin on the forehead and in between the eyebrows to move as well.

How do these muscle contractions cause the formation of glabellar lines?

As the procerus muscle and corrugator muscles move and contract, they compress the glabella skin, and the uneven edges of the moving muscles result in the development of lines. It is the repetitive movement or contractions of these muscles that cause glabellar lines to form.

How effective are Daxxify injections for the treatment of dynamic wrinkles?

According to the clinical trials that led up to its FDA approval, the results achieved with Daxi injections are comparable to those seen with BOTOX injections; however, Daxxify on average can last longer.

Are glabellar lines the only dynamic wrinkles Daxxify can address?

At this time, Daxxify is approved by the FDA for treating moderate to severe glabellar lines. Nonetheless, most experienced cosmetic providers will be comfortable using Daxi off-label to address the horizontal lines across the forehead as well as the crow’s feet that develop near the outer corner of each eye.

What happens during an initial consultation for neurotoxin injections?

Upon arrival at the Buckingham Center for Facial Plastic Surgery in Austin, Texas, the patient checks in and a friendly staff member escorts the patient to one of the treatment areas. One of Buckingham Center’s providers examines the patient’s face and asks what goals they would like to achieve with Daxi injections. Potential treatment areas include glabellar lines, horizontal lines on the forehead, and crow’s feet. Patients who are interested in addressing other facial issues should inform their provider (e.g., hollowing beneath the eyes, nasolabial folds, marionette lines). The provider may also be able to address these issues during the patient’s upcoming injection treatment session.

How many injections are needed to address glabellar lines?

Most patients receive five injections.

When do Daxxify results become evident?

With Daxi, some trial participants noticed results as early as the day after treatment. However, the majority of participants saw changes within two days of treatment with final results after 2 weeks.

How long do Daxi results last?

Daxi has been shown to last on average one to one and a half times longer than the longevity of a patient’s typical neuromodulator treatment duration.

What happens if a neuromodulator travels?

When a neuromodulator travels, it can cause muscles in different areas of the face to relax. Relaxing the muscles surrounding the treatment areas can cause the face to appear asymmetrical.

How does one keep a neurotoxin from traveling?

Patients must avoid lying down, jumping around, bending over, and massaging or manipulating the treatment areas for at least two hours following their Daxi injection treatment session at the Buckingham Center for Facial Plastic Surgery in Austin, Texas.

How much do Daxxify injections cost?

Every patient is unique. At your initial consultation and after your individual facial assessment, a quote for injections of Daxi will be provided to you.

Will health insurance cover the cost of neurotoxin injections?

When an individual has neurotoxin injections for aesthetic purposes, it is highly unlikely that health insurance will cover their treatment.

Are There Any Side Effects or Complications Associated with Daxxify Injections?

While possible, complications related to neurotoxin injections are rare. According to the results attained during the clinical trials, the participants tolerated Daxi well, and none experienced serious adverse events related to their treatment with Daxxify. Furthermore, Daxi’s safety profile is similar to the other neuromodulators already available in the aesthetics market.

Potential side effects include:

  • Headaches
  • A droopy eyelid (i.e., ptosis)
  • Inflammation, pain, a rash, bruising, and itching at the injection sites
  • Bruising near the injection sites
  • Asymmetrical facial features due to the neurotoxin traveling to another area
  • Facial numbness

Complications that patients need to watch out for include:

  • Difficulty breathing
  • Hives
  • Dizziness
  • Inflammation of the throat, lips, face, or tongue

If any of the complications listed above are present, seek medical attention right away. The best way to reduce the likelihood of experiencing a complication or an unnecessary side effect (e.g., ptosis) is to choose a provider with intimate knowledge related to the structure of the face. In addition, the cosmetic provider must have extensive experience administering neurotoxins for facial rejuvenation purposes.

The Importance of Choosing an Experienced Cosmetic Provider

It is vital that the provider in Austin, Texas, who is administering Daxi injections, understands the anatomy of the face and the specifics as they relate to the use of neuromodulators for treating dynamic wrinkles.

The size, precise location, and activity of a muscle can vary greatly from one person to the next. For this reason, providers who administer Daxxify must be familiar with the anatomy in the area receiving treatment, as well as whether the patient has any anatomical alterations due to disease or previous surgical procedures.
