Who is a candidate for Restylane?
Candidates for Restylane treatment are in good physical health and have realistic expectations for improving the appearance of wrinkles and other facial imperfections. A private patient consultation with one of our providers is the best way to determine if Restylane is right for you.
During your consultation for a Restylane-injected treatment, the provider will perform a complete facial analysis. This will allow the provider to determine if Restylane is best suited to meet your desired outcome or if another procedure will be more appropriate. The provider will also answer any questions or concerns that you may have about the Restylane treatment or other plastic surgery procedures.
There is usually little discomfort associated with Restylane injections. However, an anesthetic may be used during treatment, and any discomfort experienced afterward is usually minor, fading within a few days.
Restylane treatments are typically administered in the office setting.
The Restylane gel contains a form of local anesthesia (e.g., lidocaine), which aids in easing the discomfort throughout the procedure. In addition, to optimize individual comfort, patients may receive a topical anesthetic and/or an injectable lidocaine nerve block.
Restylane treatments are simple, quick procedures. The injector uses a very fine needle or cannula to administer the Restylane gel beneath the skin in small amounts.
Restylane is a relatively quick procedure that typically takes no more than 30 minutes to complete.
The recovery period is quick and minor after Restylane treatment. Swelling, redness or bruising may occur and typically clears up within a couple of days to 2 weeks. Normal activity can usually be resumed immediately after the procedure. It is recommended that exercise be resumed 24 hours after treatment.
Work and other normal activities can usually be resumed immediately after the Restylane treatment. However, certain facial areas result in minor swelling or bruising. The provider will discuss this in more detail at the consultation.
The results of Restylane last an average of 6-9 months.
The under-eye area is the best place for fat transfer. It can also be treated with injectable fillers such as Restylane or Resylane Eyelight. The advantages of Restylane and Resylane Eyelight are that it is an in-office procedure with very little downtime. The disadvantage is it is temporary. The advantage of fat transfer is that the results can be permanent, but the disadvantage is that survival is variable. If the survival is inadequate, a second fat transfer may be performed.
Restylane dermal fillers are administered in our comfortable, professional environment at the Buckingham Center for Facial Plastic Surgery in Austin, TX. Once you have arrived in the office, the procedure begins by carefully cleaning your face to remove any products or bacteria that could cause an infection. Restylane will then be carefully injected using an ultrafine needle or cannula to minimize discomfort and bruising. The entire procedure normally takes about half an hour.
Due to the tiny size of the needle or cannula used for the injections, most patients report minimal discomfort during their Restylane treatment. However, if you are concerned or have very sensitive skin, you may request a numbing agent before the injections begin.
Recovery from Restylane injection is minimal. You’ll be able to return to your normal life immediately and even go back to work right after your appointment if you like. It is recommended that exercise be resumed at least 24 hours after treatment. Normal hygiene activities such as washing your face can be resumed immediately, although you should avoid scrubbing hard for the first day or two.
Most patients experience nothing more than minor redness and slight swelling for a day or two after the treatment, although a few people also have a small amount of bruising at the injection sites.
Ideal candidates for Restylane include anyone who is unsatisfied with the thin or shapeless appearance of their lips and wishes to add subtle, natural volume, as well as anyone trying to smooth out fine lines and vertical wrinkling around the mouth, correcting moderate smile lines around the mouth, as well as volume loss and contour deficiencies in the cheeks and lower eyelids. Restylane is safe and effective for patients of all ages, genders, and skin types but is best used by patients who are healthy and have reasonable expectations for their results.
