Skin Rejuvenation in Austin

As you age, damage from the sun, repeated muscle movements, and the effects of gravity lead to the development of folds, lines, and wrinkles. A loss of volume from the cheeks and lips is also often part of the aging process. Hyaluronic acid fillers are FDA-approved to treat the various signs of aging, from wrinkles to volume loss. Providers at the Buckingham Center for Facial Plastic Surgery in Austin, Texas, use these fillers for rejuvenation purposes.

What Is the Juvéderm Collection?

Many people want to look younger by reducing the appearance of wrinkles and restoring fullness to their lips and cheeks. Fortunately, there is the Juvéderm collection of dermal fillers, including Juvéderm, Juvéderm Volbella, Juvéderm Voluma XC, and Juvéderm Vollure XC. The main ingredient in the Juvéderm family of fillers is hyaluronic acid, a clear, smooth, biodegradable, non-animal gel that is based on a substance your body naturally produces. Hyaluronic acid is what makes a baby and toddler’s skin look so full and plump. As you get older, your body produces less and less of it.

Juvéderm Products

Juvéderm is a family of hyaluronic acid products produced by Allergan, the maker of BOTOX. The products in the family include Juvéderm Ultra, Juvéderm Ultra Plus, Juvéderm Vobella, Juvéderm Vollure, Juvéderm Voluma, and Juvederm Volux.

All of these products are hyaluronic acid fillers, which are the most common fillers used for facial volume restoration and wrinkle improvement.

Hyaluronic acid is a naturally occurring substance that is found in our skin and joints. Hyaluronic acid fillers are produced by the process of bacterial fermentation, and then these molecules are linked together to produce different thickness and stiffness properties for the filler.

Ultra and Ultra Plus were the first two Juvéderm products, with Ultra being thinner and Ultra Plus a little thicker. The Ultra is used for fine lines, and Plus for folds and volume.

With the addition of all the Juvéderm products beginning with “V,” the product line has tuned in the uses. All the “V” products are produced using the proprietary Vycross technology. Those products ranging from thin to thick, are Volbella, Vollure, Voluma, and Volux. Therefore, Volbella is for fine lines and lip augmentation, Vollure is for nasolabial folds and other “folds”, Voluma is primarily for treating deeper areas of volume loss such as the cheeks, and Volux is used to help shape and add definition to the jawline

What to Expect During the Juvéderm Procedure

During treatment with Juvéderm, the provider uses a very fine needle, or likely a blunt needle referred to as a cannula, to inject small amounts of hyaluronic acid into the skin. The substance grabs onto water, allowing it to add enough volume to smooth out wrinkles in the area. It also helps to boost your body’s natural production of collagen, which helps to extend the duration of results.

You’ll be able to see the results from Juvéderm immediately after the injection. Results usually last on average 6-9 months and can last up to 12 months.

Since hyaluronic acid is naturally produced by the body and contains no animal-based ingredients, it is gentle and safe for all skin types. No allergy test is needed before use. Juvéderm is frequently used to add volume to the face, fill in lines and wrinkles, or augment the lips.

Depending on the facial location, downtime may vary. Bruising and swelling may be present up to two weeks after treatment. Side effects are generally mild and may include tenderness and redness at the site of the injection, bruising, or swelling.

Juvéderm Volbella

As you age, you might notice that your lips become thinner and develop fine lines. Your lifestyle and habits, such as smoking, can also affect the appearance and size of your lips. Lip filler injections, such as Juvéderm Volbella, can help add volume to the lips, balance uneven lips, or minimize the appearance of lip lines. Volbella provides natural-looking results and is intended for people over the age of 21 who do not have any allergies to its ingredients or any chronic health conditions.

Volbella is patented and contains a form of synthetic hyaluronic acid and Lidocaine, which helps to make the treatment more comfortable. Volbella is FDA-approved as a lip filler. The gel it contains uses a special process known as cross-linking or Vycross technology. Cross-linking allows Volbella to provide longer-lasting results compared to other lip fillers.

Why Consider Volbella

A study of 139 people found that two-thirds (66 percent) saw a reduction in lip lines and improved lip volume after being injected with Volbella. The benefits of Volbella include the following:

  • Fuller, plumper lips
  • Reduction in smoker’s lines
  • Improved shape of the Cupid’s bow (mid-upper lip)
  • Improved lip borders
  • Lifted and smoothed marionette lines
  • Lifted oral commissures (corners of the lips)
  • Less swelling due to lower rates of water absorption
  • Helps to keep skin soft and hydrated.

Juvéderm Voluma XC

While many injectable fillers focus on minimizing lines and creases, Juvéderm Voluma XC is the first FDA-approved hyaluronic acid filler designed to restore lost facial volume. Voluma instantly restores volume loss in the cheek area.

The hyaluronic acid used in Juvéderm Voluma is cross-linked, which allows it to provide natural-looking volume to hydrate and moisturize the cheeks. Side effects might include swelling, redness, bruising, or tenderness, but these are usually mild to moderate and fade within a week or two.

Juvéderm Vollure XC

As we age, lines and wrinkles can become deeper or more etched onto the face. Juvéderm Vollure XC is an innovative filler designed specifically for severe wrinkles and deeper folds. It contains a unique formulation of hyaluronic acid created with Vycross technology, which is only available from Juvéderm.

Along with smoothing out and filling in deep-set lines and wrinkles, Vollure can enhance volume in the jawline and cheeks, creating a more youthful appearance. Vollure is FDA-approved and can provide results that last for up to 18 months.

  • Reduces moderate to severe facial lines
  • Enhances the jawline
  • Adds volume to the cheeks

The injectable is pre-mixed with lidocaine, which helps to improve your comfort. Results are visible immediately after the treatment and will continue to improve over the course of a few days as any redness or swelling fades away.

What is Juvéderm?

Juvéderm is a collection of dermal fillers that are FDA-approved. The fillers contain hyaluronic acid and are used to treat wrinkles and add volume to the lips and cheeks. Although each filler in the Juvéderm family contains hyaluronic acid, they are designed to do different things. Juvéderm treats wrinkles and adds volume to the lips. Juvéderm Volbella adds volume to the lips and smoothes lip lines. Juvéderm Voluma XC adds volume to the cheeks. Juvéderm Vollure XC smoothes severe lines and deep nasolabial folds, adds volume to the cheeks, and enhances the jawline. Juvederm Volux XC adds support and definition to the jawline.

Who is a good candidate for Juvéderm injections?

Good candidates for any of the fillers in the Juvéderm collection are in good overall health. Juvéderm patients have experienced volume loss in the cheeks or lips or have age-related lines and wrinkles on their face. Additionally, a good candidate for Juvéderm will have reasonable expectations for the treatment’s results. For Juvéderm Vollure, Voluma, Volux, or Volbella, candidates need to be over the age of 21.

What happens during treatment with Juvéderm?

During treatment, the provider injects small amounts of Juvéderm into the skin using either a very fine needle or a blunt-tipped cannula. A Juvéderm procedure usually takes anywhere from 30 to 45 minutes, depending on the type of filler being used and the size of the treatment area. The injections are given in an office setting, and you will be able to return home immediately following treatment.

Does Juvéderm hurt?

Pain and discomfort are minimal. Many people describe feeling a pinch or pressure during the injection. To improve your comfort, your provider may provide a local anesthetic. Juvéderm is combined with lidocaine to improve patient comfort.

How long does Juvéderm last?

Filler longevity depends upon the filler used and the location. There are permanent fillers such as autologous fat, silicone, and Artefill, but autologous fat being the only option offered in our practice. The latter two have risk for chronic inflammatory reactions. Most commonly, this question is asked about hyaluronic acid fillers such as Juvéderm, Restylane, and RHA. Juvéderm has multiple products of varying thickness, including the original Juvéderm Ultra, Juvéderm Ultra Plus, and now the newer Vycross technology fillers Volbella, Vollure, Volux, and Voluma. Restylane also has the original Restylane, Restylane Eyelight, Restylane Silk, Restylane Defyne, Refyne, and Restylane Lyft. In the order listed, these fillers range from thinner and more pliable to thicker and stiffer. The thicker and stiffer fillers tend to have more longevity, but they are only good for deep tissue locations. Thinner fillers are less durable but better for fine lines, wrinkles, and folds around the mouth. The other factor affecting longevity is location. Simply, the more superficial and mobile the location of the filler is, the less durable it will be. So, the lips and perioral area tend to last the shortest, and the cheeks and upper face tend to last longer.

How is the actual Juvéderm procedure performed?

Our providers use a very fine needle or a blunt-tipped cannula to inject the Juvéderm filler into the skin in tiny amounts.

How long does the actual Juvéderm procedure last?

Juvéderm treatment is a quick, simple treatment that typically takes no longer than thirty minutes to complete.

Is anesthesia used during the Juvéderm procedure?

Prior to a Juvéderm procedure, a local injection or nerve block may be used for patient comfort. Topical anesthesia or local anesthesia mixed with the filler may be used. Different combinations will be used based on the location for injection to achieve patient comfort.

What can I expect after treatment?

No downtime is needed after any Juvéderm treatment. You’ll be able to resume work or other activities right away; however, there may be some bruising and swelling present for a few days.

Are there side effects?

Some side effects can occur, such as redness, bruising, or swelling. Many patients notice that side effects are gone completely within a week.

How long will results last?

All of the products in the Juvéderm collection provide long-lasting results. Juvéderm lasts 9 months up to 12 months. Juvéderm Volbella lasts 6-9 months. Juvéderm Voluma XC lasts up to 2 years. Juvéderm Vollure XC lasts up to 18 months. Juvederm Volux XC last up to 1 year.

Can I combine Juvéderm with other treatments?

Yes, you can combine Juvéderm with other non-surgical cosmetic treatments, including laser treatments and BOTOX.

What can I expect during a consultation for Juvéderm treatment?

During your consultation for Juvéderm treatment, we will perform a complete facial analysis. This will allow our provider to determine if Juvéderm is the best treatment to achieve your desired results or if another procedure may be better suited for you. We will address any questions or concerns that you may have about the Juvéderm procedure or plastic surgery in general.

Where is the Juvéderm procedure performed?

Juvéderm treatments are typically performed in the office setting.

When will I be able to return to work after undergoing a Juvéderm treatment?

Work and other normal activities can usually be resumed right after the Juvéderm treatment. Some swelling can occur for several days after Juvéderm is used for lip enhancement, and some patients may want to take a day or so off from work.
