A chin augmentation (aka chin enhancement surgery) is a common plastic surgery procedure that can improve the appearance of the chin or jawline. A chin implant can create a better balance in the face and build up a receding chin. Chin augmentation may be completed alone, or it may be combined with another procedure, such as a facelift, neck liposuction, or rhinoplasty.

Chin augmentations are typically performed as outpatient procedures. A chin augmentation will be completed at the Buckingham Center in our beautiful fully accredited office surgery center.

Chin augmentation may be performed at the Buckingham Center office with local anesthesia and mild oral sedation or at our outpatient surgery center.

The recovery after chin augmentation procedures lasts a week or two, although minor swelling may persist for several more weeks. Patients may experience bruising and swelling, as well as initial tightness when making facial movements, such as talking, smiling, and moving the lips. Discomfort can be alleviated with over-the-counter or prescription medication.

The recovery after chin augmentation procedures takes 7-14 days. Most patients can return to work and their normal activities within seven days. Strenuous exercise must be avoided for two to three weeks. However, lighter activity can resume 7-14 days after surgery.

Chin augmentation patients typically experience some discomfort during the recovery, which can be alleviated with medication.

Any surface stitches are usually removed within 5 to 7 days.

The incisions made for chin augmentation procedures do result in scars. Nonetheless, these scars are typically tiny and are hidden well. When the scar fades after a few months, it is usually imperceptible.

You may be a suitable candidate for chin augmentation if you are in good physical health and have realistic surgical expectations.

Chin augmentation procedures are typically performed on an outpatient basis.

For chin augmentation, a small incision is made just beneath the chin. Our surgeons prefer this external incision to intraoral incisions because it offers more precise implant placement, allows exact re-approximation of the chin muscles, and has less chance of infection. Intraoral incisions have been associated with chin contour irregularities due to improper muscle healing.

Chin augmentation procedures typically take an hour to complete.

Chin implants can be made from a variety of materials, including Medpore, silicone, and Gore-Tex. Most commonly, they are made from silicone, which is the variety we use. The second most common material is silicone, coated with Gore-Tex.
