CHIN AUGMENTATION IN AUSTIN, TX

Surgeons at the Buckingham Center in Austin, Texas, offer chin augmentation solutions for patients in Austin & Sunset Valley, TX. A beautiful face is harmonious, and each of the features work together to create symmetry. However, when the cheeks are too flat or the chin too small, harmony is lost. Men and women can achieve the facial contours that they desire with chin or cheek implants in a facial augmentation procedure with one of our surgeons. The goal of chin augmentation is to release inner beauty and build confidence. We have board certified facial plastic and reconstructive surgeons at the Buckingham Center for Facial Plastic Surgery. Read below to learn more about the facial augmentation options that are available to you in Austin, Texas.

FACIAL AUGMENTATION PROCEDURE

Chin and cheek enhancement surgery are relatively common surgical procedures. They can be performed alone, together, or in conjunction with another facial augmentation treatment (e.g., a facelift, neck liposuction, a rhinoplasty) to bring into balance the aesthetic proportions of the face. A chin and cheek augmentation adds more projection for individuals who are unhappy with the size of their chin, have a weak chin, a double chin or flat cheekbones. During a private consultation, our surgeon performs a facial analysis to determine if a cheek or chin implant would help the patient achieve his or her cosmetic goals.

Our surgeons believe that the Implantech cheek implants have significant advantages over other FDA-approved cheek implants. Therefore, these are the custom implants that our surgeons recommend for patients who are interested in adding definition to their face with cheekbone enhancement. Patients who have good underlying bone structure, but who are experiencing facial aging, may benefit from a facelift and/or facial lipocontouring using a facial fat transfer.

Surgeons at the Buckingham Center use silicone chin implants to balance the face aesthetically. With these chin implants, surgeons can provide patients with the natural-looking results they desire. The chin implant procedure can be combined with other cosmetic procedures for optimal results. The procedure can also be combined with fat removal along the jawline or on the neck to add definition to the chin.

WHAT TO EXPECT DURING THE FACIAL AUGMENTATION PROCEDURE

The chin implant procedure takes approximately 60 minutes and is performed using a local anesthetic with or without oral sedation. A small incision is created along the crease on the underside of the chin. It is through this incision that the surgeon inserts the patient’s chin implant. The surgeon positions the implant and then anchors it using strategically placed sutures.

During the cheek implant procedure, the patient receives IV sedation. This procedure typically takes an hour or two to complete. The surgeon creates a small incision on the inside of each cheek. These incisions create a pocket. The implants are inserted into the pockets. The surgeon secures the implants and then closes the external incisions with sutures.

The surgeon may recommend that the patient have facial lipocontouring or a fat transfer to contour of the cheek and jawline even more. The facial augmentation will lift and tighten the cheeks and/or restore lost fat to the cheeks.

To gather fat cells for transfer, the surgeon creates a tiny incision in the abdominal area. Fat cells are removed using liposuction and then purified before they are implanted into the patient’s cheeks using 1 mm micro cannulas. No facial incisions are necessary to complete the transfer.

Cheek and chin augmentations may be combined with another cosmetic treatment, such as fat removal from the chin or neck, a facelift, dermal fillers, or more. Each patient receives a customized treatment plan that the surgeon creates during his or her consultation.

FACIAL AUGMENTATION RECOVERY

Patients should expect the chin implant recovery to take approximately 2 weeks. Swelling and bruising are common, but these typically resolve within a couple of weeks. Some mild to moderate discomfort can be experienced, but your surgeon prescribes or recommends pain medication to keep you comfortable during recovery. Initially, dietary restrictions may be necessary. Patients typically are ready to return to work or school within 7 days. Strenuous exercise must be avoided for 2 or 3 weeks.

Cheek augmentation recovery takes approximately 2 weeks. Patients may experience some swelling and bruising in their cheeks and beneath the eyes. These symptoms subside within the first week or two of recovery. Patients must keep their head elevated and apply cold compresses to minimize inflammation.

Mild pain is common, but the surgeon prescribes appropriate medications to help the patient heal comfortably at home. After about 7 days, patients frequently feel well enough to return to work. Strenuous exercise should be postponed for 2 to 3 weeks.

FACIAL AUGMENTATION EXPECTATIONS

Chin and cheek implants improve and enhance facial contours and add symmetry and beauty to the face. Chin implants look natural, and they can bring the face into balance by plumping the cheeks and adding definition to the chin and the jaw.

During their initial consultation, patients can view their potential chin and cheek augmentation results with digital imagery. This imagery is used to match his or her treatment with goals and expectations.

FACIAL AUGMENTATION CONSULTATION

During a chin or cheek augmentation, the surgeon completes a facial analysis with the use of digital imaging. Digital imaging allows the surgeon to determine the best procedure to meet his male or female patients’ goals and expectations. At this time, the surgeon also addresses any questions or concerns that his patient may have.

THE IDEAL FACIAL AUGMENTATION CANDIDATE

The ideal facial augmentation patient is a nonsmoker who is in good health and has realistic surgical goals. Patients who are frustrated with flat cheekbones, a small chin or disproportionate facial features can benefit from this surgery.

Our chin and cheek augmentation surgeons address facial asymmetry to improve harmony between all the patient’s facial features.

FACIAL AUGMENTATION COST

The cost of a chin or cheek augmentation varies. Cost is dependent on the details of the surgery, including any additional procedures the patient chooses to have. The Buckingham Center’s surgeons work with each patient to offer affordable options.

Frequently Asked Facial Augmentation Questions

WHAT IS CHIN AUGMENTATION?

A chin augmentation (aka chin enhancement surgery) is a common plastic surgery procedure that can improve the appearance of the chin or jaw line. A chin implant can create a better balance in the face and build up a receding chin. Chin augmentation may be completed alone, or it may be combined with another procedure, such as a facelift, neck liposuction or rhinoplasty.

WHAT IS CHEEK AUGMENTATION?

Cheek augmentation is a plastic surgery procedure which can improve the appearance of a weak cheekbone structure. The cheeks can be enhanced using an implant or the patient’s own fat cells. Cheek augmentation can add prominence to the cheekbones, helping to balance the facial features.

WHERE IS THE FACIAL AUGMENTATION PERFORMED?

Chin and cheek augmentations are typically performed as outpatient procedures. A chin augmentation may be completed at the Buckingham Center office or at an outpatient surgery center. Cheek augmentations are performed in an outpatient surgery center.

WHAT TYPE OF ANESTHESIA IS USED FOR A FACIAL AUGMENTATION?

Chin augmentation may be performed at the Buckingham Center office with local anesthesia and mild oral sedation, or at an outpatient surgery center. Cheek augmentations are performed at an outpatient surgical center with intravenous sedation or general anesthesia.

WHAT IS THE RECOVERY LIKE AFTER A CHIN OR CHEEK AUGMENTATION?

The recovery after chin and cheek augmentation procedures lasts a week or two, although minor swelling may persist for several more weeks. Patients may experience bruising and swelling, as well as initial tightness when making facial movements, such as talking, smiling and moving the lips. Discomfort can be alleviated with over-the-counter or prescription medication.

WHAT IS THE DOWNTIME AFTER A FACIAL AUGMENTATION?

The recovery after chin and cheek augmentation procedures takes 7 to 14 days. Most patients can return to work and their normal activities within 7 days. Strenuous exercise must be avoided for 3 weeks. However, lighter activity can resume 14 days after surgery.

ARE CHIN AND CHEEK AUGMENTATIONS PAINFUL?

Chin and cheek augmentation patients typically experience some discomfort during the recovery, and this can be alleviated with medication.

WHEN ARE THE STITCHES REMOVED?

Any surface stitches are usually removed within 5 to 7 days. Cheek augmentation sutures are placed inside the mouth, our surgeons typically use absorbable sutures to close these incisions. Therefore, they will dissolve on their own.

WILL I HAVE SCARS AFTER A CHIN OR CHEEK AUGMENTATION?

The incisions made for chin and cheek augmentation procedures do result in scars. Nonetheless, these scars are typically tiny and are hidden well. For example, incisions created inside the mouth are not visible, and the incision that the surgeon creates beneath the chin is well hidden.

WHAT CAN I EXPECT DURING MY FACIAL AUGMENTATION CONSULTATION?

During your consultation for chin or cheek augmentation, the surgeon performs a facial analysis using digital imaging. This analysis allows the surgeon to determine and then recommend the best procedure to meet your goals and expectations. At this time, the surgeon will also address any questions or concerns that you may have.

AM I A GOOD CANDIDATE FOR FACIAL AUGMENTATION?

You may be a suitable candidate for chin or cheek augmentation if you are in good physical health and have realistic surgical expectations. A private consultation with digital imaging is the best way to determine if chin or cheek augmentation is right for you.

ARE CHIN AND CHEEK AUGMENTATION INPATIENT OR OUTPATIENT PROCEDURES?

Chin and cheek augmentation procedures are typically performed on an outpatient basis.

HOW ARE CHIN AND CHEEK AUGMENTATION PROCEDURES PERFORMED?

For chin augmentation, a small incision is made just beneath the chin. Our surgeons prefer this incision to intraoral incisions because it offers more precise implant placement and allows exact re-approximation of the chin muscles. Intraoral incisions have been associated with chin contour irregularities from improper muscle healing. For cheek augmentation, a small incision is made on the inside of the upper lip. This implant is then inserted through the incision and positioned, and the incision is then closed.

HOW LONG DOES THE SURGICAL PROCEDURE FOR CHIN AND CHEEK AUGMENTATIONS TAKE?

Chin and cheek augmentation procedures typically take an hour or two to complete.

WHAT ARE CHIN IMPLANTS MADE FROM?

Chin implants can be made from a variety of materials including Medpore, Silicon and Gortex. Most commonly they are made from silicone, which is the variety we use. The second most common material is also silicone that has been coated with Gortex. We don’t find this to be advantageous for the chin, but it may be of assistance with the cheek, as it allows a small degree of tissue in-growth to secure the implant. Securing the chin implant with tissue is not necessary.
