What Is Restylane?

Restylane is an FDA-approved, clear, biodegradable dermal filler composed of hyaluronic acid, a naturally occurring substance in the body. Because it is non-animal-based, there is no need for a skin test prior to treatment. Restylane injections in Austin at Buckingham Center for Facial Plastic Surgery are designed to restore a more youthful appearance by adding volume and fullness to the face. When injected, it effectively smooths out wrinkles and lines, enhances lips, and revitalizes areas with volume loss, offering a natural and refreshed look.

What Concerns Can Restylane Address?

Restylane is versatile and can be used to address a variety of cosmetic concerns, including:

  • Facial lines and wrinkles: Smooths out fine lines and deeper wrinkles for a more youthful appearance.
  • Lip enhancement: Adds volume and definition to the lips for a fuller, more attractive look.
  • Dark circles beneath the eyes: Improves the appearance of under-eye hollows and dark circles.
  • Volume loss in the cheeks and chin: Restores volume to sunken cheeks and defines the chin area.
  • Other areas of facial volume loss: Adds fullness to various facial areas, enhancing overall facial contours.

How Does Restylane Work?

The active ingredient in Restylane products is hyaluronic acid, which is suspended in a clear gel. As one of the fundamental building blocks that occurs naturally in the body, hyaluronic acid binds to moisture and is an integral part of repairing damage to skin cells and healing inflammation. When injected into the skin as part of a dermal filler, its moisture-binding properties allow it to plump up the skin for a full, healthy look. Restylane combines these natural properties of hyaluronic acid with a particularly small, smooth particle that creates the most natural-looking results.

Restylane Silk and Restylane Kysse

Full, smooth lips are highly sought after as part of a youthful face. Unfortunately, many people suffer from a lack of volume in their lips from an early age and, even more, lose volume in their lips as a natural result of the aging process.

Environmental factors like smoking and consistently drinking through straws can also lead to fine lines, shapelessness, and vertical wrinkles around the mouth. Experience the natural-looking results of Restylane Silk and Restylane Kysse create smoother, plumper lips and smooth out fine lines and other imperfections around the mouth.

Restylane Lyft and Restylane Contour

Restylane Lyft and Restylane Contour are FDA-approved dermal fillers able to soften facial lines and wrinkles by restoring lost volume and fullness. They consist of a natural substance known as hyaluronic acid. This crystal-clear, non-animal, biodegradable gel has minimal risk of allergy and does not require skin testing before treatment. Restylane Lyft and Restylane Contour treatments can give facial skin a more youthful and smoother appearance.

Who is a candidate for Restylane?

Who is the best candidate for Restylane treatments?

Candidates for Restylane treatment are in good physical health and have realistic expectations for improving the appearance of wrinkles and other facial imperfections. A private patient consultation with one of our providers is the best way to determine if Restylane is right for you.

What can I expect during a consultation for Restylane?

During your consultation for a Restylane-injected treatment, the provider will perform a complete facial analysis. This will allow the provider to determine if Restylane is best suited to meet your desired outcome or if another procedure will be more appropriate. The provider will also answer any questions or concerns that you may have about the Restylane treatment or other plastic surgery procedures.

Is the Restylane injection painful?

There is usually little discomfort associated with Restylane injections. However, an anesthetic may be used during treatment, and any discomfort experienced afterward is usually minor, fading within a few days.

Where is the Restylane treatment performed?

Restylane treatments are typically administered in the office setting.

Is anesthesia used during the Restylane treatment?

The Restylane gel contains a form of local anesthesia (e.g., lidocaine), which aids in easing the discomfort throughout the procedure. In addition, to optimize individual comfort, patients may receive a topical anesthetic and/or an injectable lidocaine nerve block.

How is the Restylane treatment performed?

Restylane treatments are simple, quick procedures. The injector uses a very fine needle or cannula to administer the Restylane gel beneath the skin in small amounts.

How long does a Restylane treatment take to perform?

Restylane is a relatively quick procedure that typically takes no more than 30 minutes to complete.

What is the recovery like after the Restylane treatment?

The recovery period is quick and minor after Restylane treatment. Swelling, redness or bruising may occur and typically clears up within a couple of days to 2 weeks. Normal activity can usually be resumed immediately after the procedure. It is recommended that exercise be resumed 24 hours after treatment.

Will I need to take time off from work after undergoing Restylane treatment?

Work and other normal activities can usually be resumed immediately after the Restylane treatment. However, certain facial areas result in minor swelling or bruising. The provider will discuss this in more detail at the consultation.

How long do the results of Restylane last?

The results of Restylane last an average of 6-9 months.

The area under my eyes is very hollow. Would it be possible to have a fat transfer in this area?

The under-eye area is the best place for fat transfer. It can also be treated with injectable fillers such as Restylane or Resylane Eyelight. The advantages of Restylane and Resylane Eyelight are that it is an in-office procedure with very little downtime. The disadvantage is it is temporary. The advantage of fat transfer is that the results can be permanent, but the disadvantage is that survival is variable. If the survival is inadequate, a second fat transfer may be performed.

What is the Restylane procedure like?

Restylane dermal fillers are administered in our comfortable, professional environment at the Buckingham Center for Facial Plastic Surgery in Austin, TX. Once you have arrived in the office, the procedure begins by carefully cleaning your face to remove any products or bacteria that could cause an infection. Restylane will then be carefully injected using an ultrafine needle or cannula to minimize discomfort and bruising. The entire procedure normally takes about half an hour.

Will it hurt?

Due to the tiny size of the needle or cannula used for the injections, most patients report minimal discomfort during their Restylane treatment. However, if you are concerned or have very sensitive skin, you may request a numbing agent before the injections begin.

How long will recovery take?

Recovery from Restylane injection is minimal. You’ll be able to return to your normal life immediately and even go back to work right after your appointment if you like. It is recommended that exercise be resumed at least 24 hours after treatment. Normal hygiene activities such as washing your face can be resumed immediately, although you should avoid scrubbing hard for the first day or two.

What are the side effects?

Most patients experience nothing more than minor redness and slight swelling for a day or two after the treatment, although a few people also have a small amount of bruising at the injection sites.

Who is a candidate for Restylane?

Ideal candidates for Restylane include anyone who is unsatisfied with the thin or shapeless appearance of their lips and wishes to add subtle, natural volume, as well as anyone trying to smooth out fine lines and vertical wrinkling around the mouth, correcting moderate smile lines around the mouth, as well as volume loss and contour deficiencies in the cheeks and lower eyelids. Restylane is safe and effective for patients of all ages, genders, and skin types but is best used by patients who are healthy and have reasonable expectations for their results.
